Budgeting Do's and Don'ts |

|
When you are attempting to get out of debt, the first thing that you need to work on is a budget. However, in order to create a good budget (one in which you will adhere) to, there are some things that you should avoid. They include budgeting too tightly, not having it in writing, creating a solo budget without your partner’s input or agreement, and changing the budget as you discover new things that you want to purchase. We will discuss these in this article. The first thing that you won’t want to do is to budget too tightly. This simply means, don’t underestimate. In fact, you will do much better if you overestimate. If things work out, you’ll end up having money left over at the end of the month. You can use this surplus to spend, save or pay down additional debt. You’ll also feel much better about yourself at the end of the month, if you end up spending less then you budgeted. The better you feel about yourself, the more motivated you will feel to improve your finances. It is important that you write down your budget. It’s not enough to keep it in your head. You will surely forget something or shrug off your budget all together. You are bound to be more committed to your budget if you write it down. If you are married, you will need to work with your spouse if you want to create a budget that is effective. This can sometimes be difficult if you and your spouse are not on the same page financially. If you both can’t get there, it will be wise to curtail your spending as much as possible and save where you can. If you attempt to create and follow through on a budget, you are bound to find that the money that you have budgeted has been spent by your spouse and this can be incredibly frustrating. You have to be sure that you are ready to budget and take control of your finances. If you are not, you will find yourself re-adjusting your “budget” every few days when you discover a new item that you just have to have. You’ll give in and promise yourself that you will stick to your budget after this next purchase, but somehow, it doesn’t end up happening. Don’t get me wrong, there will be times when you slip up, but if you find this happening more often then not, then you may not be ready to budget. To lessen the chance of this happening, you will want to budget some extra money that you can spend as you like. This will decrease the likelihood that you will get out of control. Budgeting is necessary to get out debt and to get your finances out of control. If you don’t budget, you will find that you rarely have enough money for the things that you need and hardly ever for the things that you want without using credit cards or personal loans. If you find that this has been true and you are looking to reverse this, try budgeting and be sure to avoid the common mistakes listed above. |
